About the Event
Although Bernstein’s operetta Candide was never a great success, its lively, effervescent Overture has become very popular with concert audiences. Described as ‘a shower of musical sparks’ it does indeed provide a sparkling opening to any concert. Tchaikovsky’s glorious Violin Concerto requires no introduction and is one of the most famous and well-known in the repertoire. Little Suite No.2 was composed by Malcolm Arnold, when he was at the peak of his time writing film scores. The third movement is a dance notable for its jazzy rhythms featuring the percussion section, especially a prominent part for bongos! The concert and our 93rd season closes with Elgar’smagnificent Enigma Variations – a brilliant characterization in music of his friends, including the famous Nimrod which has become an essential part of Remembrance Day.
