Sat 10th June 2006 7:45pm - The Anvil, Basingstoke
Conductor:
Programme:
The season ends in real style with a mixture of popular pieces and some beautiful, if less played, music.
Finlandia is an uplifting affirmation of faith in the Finnish people and their struggles against the imperialist Russians. It was written by Sibelius in 1899 and is revered today by the Finns as a second national anthem.
Bruch's popular violin concerto premiered in April 1866, although the version we hear today was eventually arrived at in 1868 after much alteration. Bruch's constant reworking of this piece has honed into into a finely crafted masterpiece. The talented Rebecca Totterdell will be performing.
Britten wrote The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra in 1946 as part of the score to a documentary film designed for children; the work consequently includes several sotto voce sections meant for the film‘s narration. It provides the perfect musical introduction to the modern orchestra. |
