Sat 16 June 2012 7:45pm - The Anvil, Basingstoke
Conductor: Stephen Scotchmer
Programme:
A concert of some of the sunniest of classics for a mid-summer’s evening. A jubilant overture by Brahms, thanking a university for an honorary award, is coupled with an ebullient symphony by Dvorak, his 8th, which overflows with warmth and melody. Pianist James Lisney joins the orchestra again after his outstanding performance of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in 2011. He plays the most famous piano concerto of them all, Tchaikovsky’s 1st. Although it was initially scorned by Tchaikovsky’s friends and colleagues, it has become the archetypal bravura showpiece.
